Under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 the Clean Energy Regulator publishes a point-in-time extract of electricity sector emissions and generation data each year.

Emissions in the electricity generation sector have decreased over the last 5 years. There were notable year-on-year reductions of:
- 7.5 million tonnes of CO2-e (4.6%) in 2019–20
- 6.7 million tonnes of CO2-e (4.3%) in 2020–21
- 6.8 million tonnes of CO2-e (4.6%) in 2021–22.
