Australia's 10 highest emitters (scope 1) and portion of scope 1 emissions from 10 highest emitters
The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting scheme is a single national framework for corporations to report greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and production. Each year, Australian corporations that meet certain thresholds must report their emissions and energy information under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting scheme. This captures about 60 per cent of Australia’s total emissions. Emissions from the agricultural, forestry, private vehicle transport and residential sectors are not collected under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting scheme and therefore not included in this data.
In 2016–17, 837 corporations reported a total of:
- 336 million tonnes of scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide equivalent)
- 86 million tonnes of scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide equivalent), and
- 3887 petajoules of net energy consumed.
The publication identifies Australia’s 10 highest emitting corporations, which collectively account for almost half (49.7 per cent) of all reported scope 1 emissions. Most of the 10 highest emitters are electricity generators.
