Choosing a system

If you are thinking about installing a solar panel, solar water heater, wind or hydro system it's important that you research the system which best suits your needs and budget.

Some questions you may like to consider before purchasing a system are:

  • How much electricity does your household or business use each year?
  • Which system is best for you?
    • The system you choose should be informed by your required usage, the weather and level of sun exposure in your location, and your budget. The Clean Energy Council, Australian Solar Council and Your Energy Savings have a range of information to assist you in researching the right system for your requirements.
    • It's also recommended that you speak with system retailers and installers. They can provide you with advice about different system types. Prices, warranties and system quality may vary and you should obtain several quotes before purchasing a system.

Feed-in tariff rates and how they are redeemed differ from state to state. You'll need to check with your state government or electricity retailer to find out what you may be eligible for. You should also contact your electricity retailer to find out how a feed-in tariff agreement will affect your electricity bill.

Once you have found the renewable energy system which is right for you, you should check the eligibility of your system under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Your system must meet all the requirements of the scheme to be eligible for small-scale technology certificates.
