Electricity sector emissions and generation data

28 February 2023

Under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 the Clean Energy Regulator (CER) publishes a point-in-time extract of electricity sector emissions and generation data each year.

Unlike the corporate emissions and energy data set, which is published at a controlling corporation level, the electricity sector emissions and generation data is published at a designated generation facility level.

A 'designated generation facility' is a facility whose principal activity is electricity production. Facilities that generate electricity for their own use or as a secondary activity are not included in this dataset.

From 2014-15, the CER also publishes total sectoral emissions and generation data—providing greater transparency in terms of how the sector is tracking in relation to the sectoral baseline set under the Safeguard Mechanism.

Comparing published data between years

When comparing total emissions between reporting years, it is important to note that each year there may be minor changes to the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (Measurement) Determination 2008, and in the number of reporters and facilities that meet the publication threshold and a reporting threshold. The CER takes all reasonable efforts to ensure the information published on its website is accurate at the time of publication.
