The Hydrogen Production Emissions Calculator is a tool that enables users to estimate greenhouse gas emissions generated by the production of hydrogen via three pathways based on user input data and information:

• Electrolysis
  
• Coal gasification with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
• Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) of natural gas with CCS.
  

The calculator has been created in partnership with GHD to support participation in the Guarantee of Origin trials. Further refinements and improvements may occur to its design to maintain compatibility with government policy.

The Hydrogen Production Emissions Calculator (the Calculator) has been developed for participants in the Clean Energy Regulator’s (CER) Guarantee of Origin (GO) Trial (Trial) to assist in the estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from a hydrogen production process. The Calculator is consistent with the calculations presented in the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy (IPHE) Methodology for Determining the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Associated with the Production of Hydrogen Working Paper (Version 1, October 2021) (IPHE Working Paper), and should be used in conjunction with the supporting Hydrogen Production greenhouse gas emissions accounting calculations (the Proposed Calculations) document, these two documents along with the calculator user guide are collectively referred to as the Supporting Documentation.

Users of the Calculator should be aware that any and all requirements, calculations, methods, and Supporting Documentation are subject to change during development of the Guarantee of Origin Scheme (the Scheme), which may affect the accuracy of the outputs of the Calculator.

Users use this Calculator at their own risk. The CER and GHD Pty Ltd (GHD) bear no responsibility and disclaims all liability for the data input to the Calculator by users, or for the outputs of the Calculator, and will in no event be liable for any direct, incidental, or consequential loss or damage of any kind, arising out of or in connection with, any use of the Calculator or reliance on the Calculator’s output. In particular, users agree that the CER and GHD will not be liable for any loss or damage suffered by users or any third party as a result of their acting on information they obtained through the Calculator. There is no link between any data entered into this Calculator and any GO certificates that may be issued once the Scheme is operational.
