  • have or be able to maintain a security clearance at the baseline level (some positions may require a higher level clearance. This will be specified in the job ad.)
  • register as a new user or log in to our career and employment opportunities portal.

There might be other eligibility requirements for the specific job, such as qualifications. They will be specified in the job ad and candidate information pack.

Helping you apply

We can provide support to help you take part in the recruitment process. This can be things like access, equipment or extra time.

The application form provides a section for you to advise if you require support. We will discuss this with you if you progress through the process.

To find out more about your options, you can get in touch with the contact officer in the job ad or contact us.

We also participate in the RecruitAbility scheme. This means if you're a person with disability, you will advance to a further stage in the recruitment process if you:

  • opt in to RecruitAbility in the application form
  • declare you have disability
  • meet the minimum requirements of the vacancy advertised.

Find out more or get help with an application through RecruitAbility.

Prepare your application

Speak to the contact officer

If you need more information about a job, get in touch with the contact officer in the job ad. This will help you understand whether the role is right for you.

Review the application process

Depending on the type of job, there might be different application processes. The details will be in the candidate information pack for each job advertised.

Tell us why you’re the best person for the role

Start by drafting your statement of claims. We want to know why you’re the best fit for the role and the agency. Try to:

  • use examples of achievements that a referee can check
  • stick to the word limit
  • tailor your responses so they are in line with the skills, capabilities and duties listed in the information pack.

Update your resume

Make sure your resume is up to date. Include current personal details, education and relevant work experience. Aim for 2 to 3 pages in length. We recommend uploading your resume as a PDF.

Provide referees

Choose 2 referees for your application. Your primary referee must be your current supervisor/manager. If there is a reason you can't list this person, make a note in your application or get in touch with the contact officer.

Remember to let your referees know you have listed them and keep them up to date through the recruitment process.

Don’t miss the deadline

Generally, we don’t accept late applications. If you can’t submit your application on time, get in touch with the contact officer in the job ad.

Submit your application

When you're ready to submit your application:

  • log in to our career and employment opportunities portal
  • complete the online application form and answer the questions
  • copy and paste your statement of claims into the application (if required)
  • upload your resume and any other documents needed
  • preview and submit your application.

Remember:

  • You won't be able to submit your application if you've skipped any mandatory questions.
  • You can withdraw and resubmit your application at anytime until the closing date.
  • You can see the status of your application when you’re signed in.

If you have problems using our career and employment opportunities portal, contact us before the closing date.

Next steps

Once the application period ends, the selection panel will review your application. We'll let you know if you're shortlisted for the next stage and what the next steps are.

We may place suitable applicants with the required skills and experience on a merit list. The merit list stays open for 18 months from the date we advertised the position in APSJobs.
