Safeguard facility reported emissions for 2018–19 now available

26 March 2020

The Clean Energy Regulator has today released the 2018–19 safeguard facility reported emissions data.

In 2018–19, 210 safeguard facilities reported a total of 144 million tonnes CO2-e covered emissions.

Responsible emitters used a range of options to meet their obligations, including applying for a calculated baseline, baseline variation (for improved emissions intensity), multi-year monitoring period, and surrendering Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs) to offset their emissions.

In addition to having a reported or calculated baseline in force:

  • three facilities had their baseline temporarily varied due to improved emissions intensity
  • 14 facilities entered a multi-year monitoring period to average emissions below their baseline, and
  • 18 entities surrendered 190,381 Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs)
    • Of the ACCUs surrendered, 16 entities sourced and surrendered 58,731 ACCUs.

All safeguard entities met their safeguard obligations by the 29 February 2020 deadline.

Please note:
  • Updates have been made to the safeguard facility reported emissions 2016–17 and safeguard facility reported emissions 2017–18 to include data that has been previously withheld from publication where decision a decision has been made by the Clean Energy Regulator to refuse applications.
  • The publication includes a new table containing information about multi-year monitoring periods. This table provides a consolidated view of data that has previously been published across a number of the safeguard data publications. The new format this year aims to make information on multi-year monitoring periods easier to understand.
  • The safeguard baselines table has also been updated today to reflect baseline determinations made under the safeguard mechanism.
