One of the objectives of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) scheme is to inform the public about greenhouse gas emissions, and energy consumption and production in Australia.

The Clean Energy Regulator is working to improve the availability and accessibility of National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting by publishing aggregated greenhouse and energy data collected under the scheme, in addition to data published on 28 February each year, which is required under legislation. A closer look at emissions and energy data publication will explore greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and production data across industries, states and territories.

This additional data publication aligns with the Australian Government’s Public Data Policy Statement (2015) and aims to open avenues for research collaboration.

Additional data is limited to data collected under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting scheme and does not represent emissions data from agricultural, forestry, private vehicle transport and residential sectors which is not collected under the scheme.

Information on Australia’s emissions is also available via the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory and energy data is available via Australian Energy Statistics. These two sources represent the emissions and energy use from the entire Australian economy and form the basis of Australia’s international reporting obligations.

Note: In considering total emissions between years, it is important to note that each year there are minor changes to the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (Measurement) Determination 2008, changes in the number of reporters and facilities that meet a threshold and changes in methods used to report emissions.

The Clean Energy Regulator takes all reasonable efforts to ensure the information published on its website is accurate at the time of publication.

Data in this publication is at 12 April 2017. Note that it may differ from the published February 2017 data.
