The Midway Report highlights the results of phase one of the GO trials. The trials garnered insights from 19 hydrogen producers and stakeholders, including upstream entities, such as water and electricity producers in addition to downstream entities, such as ammonia producers. Three major hydrogen production pathways were represented – electrolysis, steam methane reforming and coal gasification – with several participants calculating their hydrogen's emissions intensity using the Hydrogen Production Emissions Calculator shared for testing by the Clean Energy Regulator.

The hydrogen industry in Australia is emerging, with a significant pipeline of announced projects but few operational commercial scale hydrogen producers.

Trial participants confirmed that commercialisation would be aided by a high integrity government-backed GO scheme that can demonstrate emissions credentials to hydrogen buyers, providing market certainty and underpinning commercial arrangements.
