Corporations that report under National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting scheme report emissions data from different greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and specified hydrofluorocarbons and perfluorocarbons.
These greenhouse gas emissions are measured as tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalence (CO2-e)—which has a global warming potential value of ‘1’. The amount of greenhouse gas that a corporation emits is measured as an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide, using the global warming potential of each of the different greenhouse gases—which have different carbon dioxide equivalence values.
Scope 1 NGER emissions by year with updated global warming potential values
In the 2015–16 reporting year, updated global warming potential values were introduced for some greenhouse gases reported under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting scheme. Due to these changes, scope 1 emissions reported from 2008–09 to 2014–15—published on the Clean Energy Regulator website, cannot be directly compared to 2015–16 data.
The adjusted data for 2008–09 to 2014–15 has been provided in the graph above to assist with making a like for like comparison between 2015–16 data and previous years.
