Small-scale systems installed across Australia

This map shows the total number of small-scale renewable energy systems installed under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme in each state and territory, and the total kilowatt rated output for December 2017 and the national cumulative totals since 2001.

*Given the 12-month period for creating small-scale technology certificates, the number of certificates for monthly installations will continue to rise. The data which informs this month’s update is accurate as at 31 December 2017. For up to date figures, please refer to the postcode data for small-scale installations.

National trends and analysis

  • There were 7709 small-scale systems installed nationally in December, with a total capacity of 42 211 kW.
  • Installation rates for December are currently tracking lower than November, with 7709 installed compared to 7944 last month.
  • Queensland continues to have the highest level of small-scale installations across Australia with 2400 systems installed so far in December.
  • Queensland had the highest number of commercial sized solar PV systems (10-100kW) installed in December, with 182 systems installed.
  • There were 518 commercial sized solar PV systems (10 – 100kW) installed Australia-wide in December.
  • There were 145 solar PV systems that had a concurrent battery storage installation in December.

Each table below shows the breakdown of system types installed in each state and territory for December 2017, and the running total since the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme commenced in 2001.

  • The Australian Capital Territory installed 45 small-scale systems in December, which is lower than last month.
  • Solar water heaters represent 11 per cent of the small-scale installations in the Australian Capital Territory in December.
  • The Australian Capital Territory had two commercial sized solar PV systems (10 – 100kW) installed in December.
  • Kaleen (postcode area 2617), Nicholls (postcode area 2913) and Kambah (postcode area 2902) were the top performing suburbs​ in the Australian Capital Territory in December with three new installations in each suburb.
  • There were five solar PV systems that had a concurrent battery storage installation in the Australian Capital Territory in December.
  • New South Wales had the second highest level of small-scale installations across Australia in December, representing 22 per cent of the total number of installations Australia-wide this month.
  • New South Wales installed 1731 small-scale systems in December, which is lower than last month.
  • Solar water heaters represent 11 per cent of the small-scale installations in New South Wales in December.
  • New South Wales had 149 commercial sized solar PV systems (10 – 100kW) installed in December.
  • Port Macquarie (postcode area 2444) is the top performing suburb in New South Wales in December with 19 new installations.
  • There were 52 solar PV systems that had a concurrent battery storage installation in New South Wales in December.
  • The Northern Territory installed 54 small-scale systems in December, which is lower than last month.
  • The Northern Territory installed four commercial sized solar PV systems (10 – 100kW) in December.
  • Zuccoli (postcode area 0832) was the top performing suburb in the Northern Territory in December with five new installations.
  • Solar water heaters represent two per cent of the small-scale installations in the Northern Territory in December.

  • Queensland had the highest level of small-scale installations across Australia in December, representing 31 per cent of the total number of installations Australia-wide this month.
