Thriving habitats avoid emissions

The Wiree Avoided Deforestation project will protect nearly 7000 hectares of native forest from clearing under the avoided deforestation method. Successfully obtaining a contract in the fourth Emissions Reduction Fund auction, the project run by Climate Friendly Pty Ltd will secure 450,000 tonnes of abatement over 10 years.

Working with a local landholder the project is operating within the western local lands services region in New South Wales, approximately 20km east of the Enngonia township within the Bourke Shire Council region.

The project area land was once degraded by feral animals and sheep grazing but has seen the native vegetation thrive once again as a result of the project. The regenerated vegetation offers shelter from threats like clearing and habitat degradation. This avoided deforestation project ensures native wildlife in the region, such as the Stimson’s python and the grey-crowned babbler, are protected.
