A national supermarket retailer will introduce commercial food waste source separation collection systems at more than 600 of its supermarkets across Australia. This project was successful in obtaining a contract in the fourth Emissions Reduction Fund auction in November 2016.
The project is being conducted under the source separated organic waste method, which sees participants separate their organic waste from landfill waste at the outset, avoiding organic waste from being taken to landfill sites.
The organic waste is then treated by being composted or other approved methods for organic waste treatment. Emissions are reduced through this project by reducing the amount of waste going to landfill and reducing the methane emissions at landfill sites around Australia.
