Buy-back price

The table below shows the buy-back price for one free carbon unit on each day of the current month. The price changes on a daily basis in accordance with the change in the number of days before 15 June (see how is the buy-back price calculated?).

The buy-back calculation is based on the day we receive the buy-back request. The table is updated on the second business day of each month following the publication of the BBB corporate bond rate by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA).

Note: This table is intended to assist you to estimate the buy-back price you will receive. The actual buy-back price may be different to the estimate. This is because the figures in the table are rounded whereas the actual buy-back price will be calculated using an unrounded price per unit. We will not be liable in the event of a difference.

How is the buy-back price calculated?

We calculate the buy-back price for free carbon using the following formula in the legislation:

Buy-back Price = Fixed charge x Factor specified in the Clean Energy Regulations 2011 x Number of units

Breakdown of the formula

Fixed charge means the per unit charge applicable under the Clean Energy Act 2011 for the issue of a carbon unit with a vintage year of that fixed charge year. In the 2012–13 financial year, the fixed charge is $23 per tonne. The fixed charge in 2013–14 will be $24.15 per tonne and in 2014–15 will be $25.40 per tonne.

The factor specified in regulations is:

1/(1+r)n/365

Where:

r is the per annum yield (expressed as a percentage) for BBB rated corporate bonds with one to five years maturity, as published by the Reserve Bank of Australia, that is the latest daily rate published prior to the day the request to the Clean Energy Regulator was received.

n is the number of days before 15 June in the fixed charge year in which we receive the request.
