13 November 2012 - Changes to global warming potential values
The Kyoto Protocol
covers a 'basket' of greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide,
hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulphur hexafluoride. Some of these
gases have more substantial warming effects than others, due to their chemical
structures which affect how well they absorb heat and their residence times in
the atmosphere.
Global warming potential values are used to convert masses of different
greenhouse gases into a single carbon dioxide-equivalent metric (CO2-e). In
broad terms, multiplying a mass of a particular gas by its global warming
potential value gives the mass of carbon dioxide emissions that would produce
the same warming effect over a 100 year period.
The updated global warming potential values will apply to all Carbon Farming
Initiative projects for abatement from 1 July 2017.
Liability for emissions from waste deposited between 1 July 2012 and 30 June
2017 will be calculated using the current global warming potential values. The
updated global warming potential values will apply to all emissions covered
under the carbon pricing mechanism arising from waste deposited at landfills
from 1 July 2017.
More information can be found on the Department of Climate Change and Energy
Efficiency website.
