Prepare now for 2019 exemption certificate applications

01 February 2019

Companies who conduct eligible emissions-intensive trade-exposed (EITE) activities are encouraged to prepare for 2019 exemption applications under the Renewable Energy Target.

A company that carries out EITE activities may benefit from an exemption certificate through negotiations with their electricity retailer (a liable entity under the Renewable Energy Target).

Consider applying using electricity use method

The Clean Energy Regulator is currently transitioning to the electricity use method. We encourage clients to apply for exemption certificates with the electricity use method. By 2020 all EITE exemptions are to be determined using the electricity use method.

Sites that used the electricity use method in 2018 must use it in 2019. Sites that consumed more than 2000 GWh in 2018 must use the electricity use method in 2019.

Companies deciding which of the two methods to use should refer to the industry assistance page on our website.

2019 applications are open now

Applications for exemptions certificates are now open, and must be made on or before 1 April 2019. This is a legislated deadline and no extensions can be granted.
