Earning ACCUs under vegetation methods

05 December 2017

The Clean Energy Regulator’s role is to administer the Emissions Reduction Fund including decisions on claims for Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs).

Land based emission reduction projects cover large areas. Human-induced regeneration and native forest from managed regrowth projects are required to show forest potential, and that potential must ultimately be realised. Projects registered under these methods have typically been registered for less than 5 years; hence, regrowth is still at an early stage.

We signalled in our 2017 Compliance Priorities, published in February this year, that we would make increased use of high resolution geospatial imagery as part of our role in ensuring the long term integrity of claims.

Our use of higher resolution imagery is at an early stage. Based on limited early observations, we decided to issue interim guidance to the industry on parameters that would give us confidence on claims; and that we may ask for further evidence where claims are outside those parameters. We are currently seeking comments on that guidance.

For more information see Crediting abatement – human induced regeneration and native forest from managed regrowth methods.
